I was looking at the pictures and noticed there seems to be black fabric of some kind thats on the inside of the helmet around the ear holes. I know a lot of TB's paint there inside of the bucket black it out to hide the inners beings of the helmet. So my question is it a fabric or black plastic cut and glued into the back of the helmet around the ear holes?

I don't think anyone has nailed it down to what it is exactly but most seem to lean towards it being a fabric or possibly even just that part of the helmet painted black.

Its about to drive me nuts. It's always the little details I let get to me.

you could have one side in fabric, and the other side plastic. that way, youre at least 1/2 right :)

I always thought it was 2" wide black Gaffer tape..again, like everyone else's thoughts, not confirmed...but thats what i always thought it was. Seems like the quickes simplest way to do it with something they very likely had on hand.

For my trooping helmets though, i just paint the inside all black.

Yep, me too. I use black, water based craft paint in a matte finish. No stink or fumes...! ;)

I use black sticky backed felt, cut into rectangles and it seems to do fine, easily cut and stuck into the lid. Of course I have no idea what they actually used . I did think it was the headband sweatband, cut and glued into place as the only original helmet I have looked into doesn't use a wrap over type sweat but a glued on pad.
