kaa1304
Hey guys, Was wondering if anyone can help me. I've aquired a helm, which I'm about to strip, sand and repaint but the seller didn't know what make it was. I can't see any identify marks, although the inside is lined, I didn't want to lift it up to see as I quite like it. I personally can't tell one make from the other yet I think the material is fibreglass. It's not as smooth as my tk ABS but also it's not as nice as my fibreglass RG either. Any thoughts, welcome! thank you
CRISTONAMO
I think that's a don post vinyl helmet.
Griffin-X
Looks sort of like a KS recast...note the dimple on the snout area where the snout riser plate should be...KS helmets have that dimple. The ear cutouts looks weird too, a little off IMO...
lonewolf
Yes KS recast in fibreglass, an Ebay seller , now he has a newer version I think.
kaa1304
Urg, that doesn't sound good. Do you think it's worth working with? I mean, it was cleared once and while I understand that has no bearing on a new submission, it would be slightly amiss if it failed due to a physical reason... and I can only improve it... (hopefully) Here's a close up of the ears, they are definetly different shapes. I feel like the left ear is the right shape, but too small. And the right ear certainly doesnt need that sharpe angle at the top. I also just found the KS website, saw their ABS, very similar yeah. Man, recast. I feel... Thanks for the help! Cyber Scout
Aye you can tell its fiber from the inside John (lonewolf), and a KS mostly by the visor corners and the thin looking ears. Quite shocked at how thin the fiber glass is on this
COBRA
Aside from tiding up the ears, it should be OK once you give it a fresh coat of paint. For me as the wearer, it would bug me that the helmet is heavy as it is made of fibreglass, where as the the actual KS one is made out of ABS and is light as a feather. Griffin-X
So...the real question. Where did you acquire this helmet?
Chef
As I said over on the Garrison forum, there's nothing particularly 'wrong' with this bucket. The shape is OK... better than some I've seen, but could be better. It's no 'Star Fortress', so all is not lost. The ears, well, the shape inside is nothing a bit of work with a dremel won't sort out. I'd centralise the snout a bit, and on the inside I'd beef up the join a bit. It just looks like who ever built it just gave it a wipe of filler / chemical metal to create the join. The lay-up does look very thin, and therefore won't be very strong. it will be brittle and prone to cracking should it get bashed about too much. But it will be relatively light. I'd go as far to say that it is only a 1oz lay-up (possibly even less, with just a tissue), which is only half as thick as I'd recommend as a minimum for a GRP lay-up. I use 2-3oz on mine, with up to 4oz in the critical areas like edges. It's certainly not a basket case by any stretch of the imagination. kaa1304
So...the real question. Where did you acquire this helmet? It was sold to me by a garrison member who was cleared and had trooped it, along with all the hard bits. it was listed as "unknown origin". Other hard bits are "SC" if that's correct? The weight doesn't actually bother me as it's a lot lighter than my fibreglass MLC royal guard lid! Rob, you are right about brittle - I shattered one of the corners a couple of days ago and have rebuilt it. Well, if I drop it, hey, good excuse to get a new one eh?!
