scratchbuilding the helmet

Recommended Posts

Once again I need help from the BS community!

I'm starting to build the mould for the faceplate. I'm currently watching pictures and taking measures. But I'm not going to make the nose greeblie. it would help me a lot to have this greebile. this way I can build the mold around it and make everything look more accurate B) . So the great question is : where can I buy one?

in the meantime it would be great to know the measures of the greeblie :) .

grazie !!

daniel

bad news! I'm trying to vacuumform the face of the helmet, and it doesn't work. looks like the machine can't suck enough air.... maybe the mold is too big or high. I did some holes on the visor , but it doesn't change. before I waste more plastic, I need to find a solution

Post pictures of what you have bud, and we can see where the vac issues are occurring.

I suspect you don't have enough vac holes in the visor area and/or they are not right near the deep indents.

Because that area is effectively a recess to the rest of the buck, you really need to vent it all, because if any of the small creases or vac holes get covered up, you're effectively cutting off all the vac/venting to that area and will result in a weak pull.

Post a pic of the face plate buck directly from the front, and I'll annotate it for you with where I think all the vac-holes should be.

They don't need to be big (only say 1.5mm each), but there does need to be LOTS of them.

P1040013_zps9d138974.jpgI have finally assembled and painted the helmet!! it's NOT 100% perfect , the sealing line is still visible . I also run out of plastic and my supplier seems to have disappeared  ( ninja guy). anyway I have learned a few tip and tricks.. next one will look better.

I will upload some more pix as soon as I get the visor and glue the nose detail..

ah and I don't have decals, I don't even know if decals for other helmets will work here...

The seam lines are just a question of time and patience. Fill it, sand it, flat it, fill it sand it flat it.

Takes a while to get it right.

If you gently warm the plastic (not so easy now you've painted it, so you may not want to), you can pull all the bits in and match them up.

Likewise, the visor shroud. If you cut back the rear flashing of the visor shroud, so it's more flush, you can pull in the bottoms of the visor and counter the flare.

Good effort buddy.

Pleased to see you're cracking on with it.

hi! I started this topic on 28 february 2013. so more than a year has passed and finally I have something in my hand that resembles a bikerscout helmet. even if working by myself, I have received precious help in the bikerscout forum. so thank you guys!! :icon_bow:

I still have some questions .....

how should I do the hole in the ears and where do I need to paint black? all inside the helmet??

visor and faceplate are not attached in my helmet , only the 3m bolt keep them together but there's still some movement in between. not sure how to solve this....

ok here's some pictures

Hi,

it's been a long time since I started this project ( Feb 2013) . but after a long hiatus ( and a snowtrooper build ) I have pictures of my scout helmet 2.0

basically all the molds have been heavily modified. and the visor molds restarted from zero cause they just weren't right.

I can't say is over because there is still some things to fix. but definetly much better than v. 1.0

anyway I leave it to your judgement, here are some pics

Wow v.2 turned out even better! Glad to see you came back to work on it. Nothing worse than reading a thread and seeing it stop only half finished.

thank you buddy! even if it looks better, there's still space for improvement. receiving critiques/ support / encouragement is always great
