silent
Heading out tommorrow to find a pair of boots and I have questions.... 1. Is there a rivet on each side of the boots to hold on the vinyl? 2. Any suggestions on around the rim of the vinyl to help give a stronger top? 3. Does the vinyl need any strengthening to stand up straight? Saw a build where they doubled it over with some type of stiffening pieces in the middle
chimei
1. yes...it's hidden under the "dog bone" 2. at the top? no. but i would suggest a second strip of ABS at the bottom of the holster as well as the one at the top...those rivets can really pull when you are slipping the boot on and off. 3. my next set of boots will include an attempt at doubling up the vinyl...so reduce the wear on it from bending so much, but it you use a stronger (thinker) vinyl, it should actually stand up well with trooping. the trick is to get it to "wrinkle" a bit to look natural, but not so much that it looks like they are 100 years old. selecting the right vinyl is key hope that helps. and as always...tons of stuff on the boards. start here (if you haven't already): http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=
silent
Oh I have been reading a ton, and rereading and reading it again, so much good info here, would be really nice if I could yank a full size scout out of the computer and do some measurements, can't wait to see one in person to get a closer look at their build. Definately going to put abs pieces behind the rivets for the holster, also saw where someone put a velcro strip behind one to secure the top of holster around the thigh to help with the weight
4505Marcel
Rivits most certainly bro with backing washers, the top of the boots is fine just hemmed over, and no nothing is needed to strengthen the boots in my opinion. I have had my boots for 4 years and the only thing is they have sagged by about 12mm as the boot natuarally creased as I kneel ect. All foot wear will crease as we know if you make them too rigid by doubling up I fear they may end up looking rigid like welly boots

I want to make sure I do this thing right to begin with. I've been on BSN since right after Celebration, and I'm still learning everyday. We'll be future Garrison Tyranus squad mates...although across the state from one another.
Sentry02
Hey James, I am in your garrison and I have a pair of Marcel's fine boots. You're more than welcome to check them out next time I see you.
silent
Would love to see them, planning on going to the air and scare, and I wnat to see as much scout armor as possible to get ideas, just something about seeing how it all goes together in person vs a photo
Maelstrom
okay so found 3 different boots at walmart, and wanted your guys opinion on them. As I am making the boots myself I plan to try for lancer status. 1st boot *I am concerned with the inset design between the to and heel* 2nd Boot *while the ridge pattern is better and has no wierd inset between the toe and heal, concerned with the two toned boot and sole* 3rd Boot *While the two-toned sole is less pronounce, still visible* what do you guys think? bwattsup
I don't think any of the 3 will work James. The first one due to the insert and 2-tone color. The other 2 because of the 2-tone color alone. You can always paint them though and go for the weathered look. Do you have any liquidator type stores in your area? (Ex. Burlington Coat Factory, CW Price, Marshalls, Rugged Wearhouse, etc...) I found a pair of Fila boots yesterday at Burllington for $30.00. CW Price had a pair of 1-colored soles for $20. Seemes like all of the major stores are going with the 2-toned soles. Here's a pic of the ones I bought. They were comfier than the cheaper ones at CW price, but are going to take a little more work to get them Lancer apprroved.
