Will cutting into the tank keep it eligible for passing certification?

So I'm having some trouble with how my tank conforms to by backpiece. When I shape it to the proportional size there's overhang on the bottom, and there's a small gap in between the two. When I size it with no overhang it's far too small. So what should I do here, flatten the end so there's no overhang, should I fill in the gap or let it be, Should I just make it really small, or somethin entirely different?
