  1. I think this is the post you were looking for: http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=4484&st=20 (just scoll down a bit) The "old" snout is the one WITHOUT the riser plate, while the "new" one is WITH the riser plate. Both "old" and "new" come in solid and hollow variants. Hope that helps, and they are all great! Just got one myself the other month! =)
  2. Hooray! Congratulations!!
  3. Oh mm I forgot to update on this one, but I did in my armor upgrade thread. The thing rubbing against my heel was the top of the stiffener inside the part of the boot that goes around the heel (i think it's called the counter). It my heel rubbed against it a lot, and it also ended right where the bone of my ankle was; so whenever I took a long step, or go up stairs, it would collide with my anklebone quite harshly and that was the cause of some pain in addition to making blisters. But yes Dart, that's exactly what I did, the combo of insoles and very good hiking socks. The two filled up the small "dead space" around my foot, and also lifted my heel up enough so the stiffener wasn't a problem anymore. So blisters are gone, no more hot spots, and thanks for the heads up on the under armor socks, I'll go get some and toss them in my trunk just in case I forget to put on my hiking socks the night before a troop. The moisture wicking feature sounds divine.
  4. Wow this is excellent! Many, many thanks for sharing!
  5. Excellence! Can't wait to see it in action.
  6. The boots look excellent! Keep it up!
  7. Hey congratulations on the first troop! I'll look forward to reading your post later. I'm not liking how you say that your left eye is a little blurry now from the strain, I'd say get your eyes checked up if it doesn't go back to normal in a few days. I'm one of those in the contacts boat, but I know what you mean about the glasses in the face. Tried it with my KS bucket and wasn't too happy about it. (might be the way I put my padding inside, there's lots of room for me) You said your glasses are an older pair, so maybe it's a good time to get a new pair. If the old ones are still fine, getting a pair only for trooping inside the bucket might be an option. I'd recommend Flexon frames because they are a little lighter and can bend inside your bucket without a problem. But if they have to bend too much though, double check the prescription/get the prescription changed to accommodate that bend so that your eyes won't be strained from wearing them. Given how little room you have in your bucket to begin with, getting new frames that will fit properly may be difficult; so if going that route is not feasible, (probably isn't) just go ahead and upgrade your helmet. I'd rather you not lose your vision, that'll make dodging the trees a wee bit harder.
  8. Her boots look great!
  9. MOST EXCELLENT! Congrats!
  10. Excellent work! It isn't a hobby unless you put your sweat and BLOOD into it! Figuratively and literally of course*
  11. Wait, I thought the dots point toward the front? *Borrowed from Screen Caps Gallery* But yes, flip direction of one of the squares so they will be facing the same way when you put them on
  12. Looks like you have a mix of MC and SC for the belts. I'm no expert on this matter though. The first pic, the one piece belt I believe is an MC belt, the one in 3 parts I believe is SC. The rest of the armor, I think I'll leave that to some expert eyes. That tank topper really scares me...
  13. Ah yes, the hill isn't too large; I remember now. For the pouch, that's what I have planned out all for today after my classes are over. Should be back in action by the end of the weekend!

  14. haha! i need to get fixing on one of my pouches this week. should be a quick fix, and after that I'm gonna sign up for more! Eyeballing the Frank and Sons collectible show at the moment. I thought Riverside was on the other side of the hill? O.o

  15. agreement with above ^ if you're willing to wander around a swap-meet you might be able to find a good work-boot that fairly matches the one used in tutorial. I did that and they turned out fairly decently. Go the tutorial route and you'll probably save yourself enough funds to get yourself a blaster For the sewing part just observe your wife while she's working on her other projects, you'll pick up the skills in no time.
  16. Before and after pic of the shoulder bell is amazing! great job!
  17. Exactly my thoughts on this as well! Nothing better than making something with your very own hands and then proudly displaying it to the world Good luck with your build, and try to do it with minimal blood, yes? That exacto knife under the nail sounds downright horrible!
  18. Is this the tutorial you were talking about? The one in the archives? KS Helmet (ABS), Tutorial on how to assemble it from kit form! I think it's the same tutorial that the kit will link to, but it was detailed enough for me to make my helmet. Just make sure to pay attention to the curve on the visor where it meets the dome, back piece where it meets the dome, and be careful with the lens and ear holes. I had a nasty xacto knife slip on the right of the lens, and there's a little random gouge to the right of the lens now. Don't worry about making too many mistakes, I have had too many slips of the knife and file so that "putting your sweat and blood into it" became quite literal. Measuring twice, cutting once, test fit, repeat worked very well for me. I started trimming the dome first, to get used to how the knife interacts with the ABS, and because it will later get covered up by the faceplate and back of the helmet. I like your idea of having reference pictures printed out, I think I should have done the same when trimming; I would not have been stuck inside trimming and having plastic shavings fall into the keyboard, I say go print your pics! and take pictures of your own and share them on here! Good luck and have fun!!
  19. Congrats! and looking good!
  20. Ah! thanks for the feedback! I shall most definitely look into that. The semi-weathered look is starting to get a foothold in my mind right now, but I'll try not to over do it. The white paint markers would definitely be of help. As for the blistering problem, more ponderment is required.
  21. Part of my getting back into making my scout gear: redoing my boots! I made my original pair two summers ago, but I guess the vinyl wasn't stretched enough, or something similar went wrong etc etc. so the toes were "wrinkly" and the masking strip didn't cover everything. That, along with my hasty fix for running out of goop several months later during a touch-up with rubber cement [horrible! HORRIBLE!!!], ended up staining the vinyl, I just decided to redo the whole thing this past weekend. Took advantage of this week's California heat wave to cook the boots too. I guess that's all I can say about that heat wave. Pics or it didn't happen: Might have overused the vinyl on the toes. Well, made it easy to pull back and stretch The oven!!! Brown spots near the heel = rubber cement stains. The finished result!! Very happy with it. Well, was. 1) I couldn't find my tailor's chalk when creating the patterns so I used a fine black sharpie thinking that the backs of the vinyl would be okay. Well after a day of romping about UC Irvine in them to test out how well the goop held, I found out that the sharpie ink bled to the vinyl that made contact with it. So now I have ink around the dogbone area. Not immediately noticeable, but I don't like it, and have not been able to clean it off. I guess I'll go for the "worn in/semi used" look. Ewoks bleed purple right? 2) Something happened to my feet; my boots gave me blisters behind my heels. That didn't happen before, and the boots are a good fit. So I will need to find a fix to that and test out the boots again. Can't have blistery feet after a troop now can we?
  22. Amazing indeed! You really blended into those trees in those pictures back there!
  23. Hooray! Congrats!!!
