I'm a little late to the conversation, but here goes:
I do quite a bit of custom dye work, dye will only work on cotton, wool, silk, rayon, or other natural fiber.
When you are using a 50/50 blend the dye may work, but will be extremely light. If you have any test fabric at all, I'd try that first with a small amount of dye.
If you choose the painting option--it does work really well, try Design Masters floral paint from Michaels. It comes in about 8-10 different colors of green, and you can also get a few tannish shades and browns. It's permanent, but will make the clothing stiff.
That's how a lot of folks do Endor clothing.
