Building KS armour. Wish me luck

Recommended Posts

So my KS armour has arrived and I've made a start. I think the helmet will be the part of find the most challenging. Having had a look it seems the knees aren't quite right so I may buy some new ones and some new drop boxes from SC as I've also read the drop boxes are a bit big.

I'm happy with the thickness of the plastic and there is no yellowing so we shall see. I could do with pointers on how to get this authorised by the 501st.

Anyone advise on the knees?

I am also aware I need to add another Velcro strap to the top of the knee and I am also ordering new greeblies.

I have KS armor and it can be approved. Definitely replace the drop boxes and boot holster though, they are too big. The knees are fine, along with the biceps, forearms and belt. You'll also want to trim the bells to be more accurate. How did the chest and back turn out?

I have trimmed the bells and am quite happy with them but can't be too sure until they're on the torso armour.

The chest and back aren't too bad, quite wide under the arms but hopefully the elastic will pull those in and then once worn with the under suit then it'll be fine as it isn't too bad. I've trimmed them down a little as in panda troopers guide, but need to find some off white elastic to sit over the join. The backpack topper looks pretty good, so I'll probably fit that later today.

The KS site says a rivet at the bottom of the backpack is correct, is this true?

Hi James,

Per the CRL the rivet is only required for level 2 approval but most scouts put it in to provide additional support and to pull the tank tighter to the back armor. Here's the CRL thread: http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=9898

Look forward to seeing some pics of your build. Best to you!

Ok, so I've done a large amount of the armour now. Got to order the greeblies and also make the helmet and boots. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I'll try and get a picture of me wearing it when it's set and will go from there

Great work so far. To get approved, you'll need to paint the TD tube grey. I'd also swap out the drop boxes and holster for SC. You can drop Jeff at SC a line and pick up a set easily.

The TD is grey, just poor lighting I thing, I'll get a better pic of it to show.

I'll get the correct boxes and bolster, really I only did those as a) I wanted a practice run and B) I have an imminent fancy dress party and want it ready in time. I'll try and get some pics of it on showing the fittings, see if there are any pointers there too

Got some photos of me wearing the armour. Annoyingly when I try to get a pic of the chest armour fitting it twists slightly.

I have some of the SC drop boxes en route as well as the correct greeblies, other than that any pointers?

Looking pretty good so far. You're going to want to trim that return edge off the bottom of the bells and round them out. The KS bells are just, funky, so hopefully you can make them work. I replaced mine with SC bells. Other than that, you're on point. Also, don't forget to paint the chest rectangle grey.

I shall do the bells tonight. Having a mare with the helmet!

I was going to ask about the webbing for the drop boxes. I'll also need new clips for them too! Shall order those now

A good source for those is jontay.com.

I have ordered a KS kit and just want clarification on some name. Are the drop boxes the same as thigh boxes and what are "bells" referring to. I'm looking at ordering some replacements from SC and just looking for info. Thanks!

Hi Patrick. The drop boxes are same as the thigh boxes and the shoulder bells are the armor pieces that cover your shoulders. There are three pieces of armor on the arm: the forearm, the bicep, and the shoulder bell.

I'm strongly considering buying the untrimmed KS armor due to their sub $300 price point. So far it looks like it's worth it.

Would the differences between KS and SC only be really noticed by the trained eye?

For anyone who does not hang out here on BSN, probably not noticeable. However, the KS setup has lots of issues that will require updates/modifications before you could really feel good about your costume. The hang boxes are incredibly TOO large, and the chest/back are smaller than SC by comparison. The shoulders are rather wonky and will require some work and shaping. But the belt, biceps, forearms, and knees are acceptable. You'll also need to replace the TD end caps and most of the greeblies. Overall, you can make a good setup out of the KS kit - I did. Mine is totally a KS/SC/Chef hybrid. :)
